Wooden Nickel Reclaimed Wood Earrings

Wooden Nickel Reclaimed Wood Earrings

$48.00

This Wooden Nickel Reclaimed Wood Earring design began as a block print which was converted into a digital image before being engraved. The wooden circle is 1.3 inches in diameter topped with a 3 mm sterling silver ball post sourced in the USA.

The Buffalo Nickel was created in 1913 as part of a drive to beautify coinage. The many ironies of this endeavor never cease to amaze (the copper made to look silver, the artist appropriating Native imagery, the systemic desecration of Native culture through boarding schools at the very time this imagery was selected to beautify, the attempt to slaughter all buffalos because - in the words of one Colonel - "Every buffalo dead is an Indian gone.”).

As bleak as this history may be, the buffalo continues to be the powerful symbol of gratitude, abundance, blessings and strength. (In actuality we are talking about the bison of the American plains). Our future is not bleak! Through near devastation we will emerge into a brighter future. The buffalo has shown the way. Wear these with a sense of knowing.
