Sterling silver 20 gauge wire is hand-formed; adorned with seed beads, reclaimed wood and sterling silver beads. The Delica seed beads are in the colors of Indigenous corn (the sacred seed): matte black, mustard, cream and red.

Our soil is dying. It is less nutrient rich than ever. Colonial agriculture typically sought to plant a single type of crop year after year creating barren land. Meanwhile Indigenous agriculture always balanced the giving and taking of nutrients. A simple search of “three sisters farming” quickly demonstrates this. Gratefully, this way of farming is returning as yet again science agrees with what Indigenous people have always known.

These earrings represent for me the return to the building blocks of nutrient rich food (steps/puebloan rain clouds), hope (rainbow) and a sacred corn kernel (triangle). Read more about the movement to preserve Indigenous food.
